Tufting is utterly timeless. It’s one of those design concepts that never seems to go out of style—in fact, it’s something that’s been around for centuries. How many other home design trends can we say the same for?
It may be tweaked or modernized, but it’s something that always maintains a presence.
I like tufting for a number of reasons. Namely, it’s classic, elegant and adds a sense of dimension, richness and luxury to a room.
Tufted furniture is something that can be incorporated in a home regardless of the style, and it really blends seamlessly with any look from traditional to modern. Plus, I love tufted pieces because you can splurge on them, knowing they’ll never go out of style. I try to incorporate at least one tufted piece per project!
Tufting isn’t just timeless from a stylistic perspective—it’s also designed to stand the test of time from a functional standpoint. The upholstery is tight and durable, which is another reason it’s okay to give yourself the green light to spend a little more on an item with tufting.
The Chesterfield Sofa
The Chesterfield Sofa is possibly the most quintessential piece of tufted furniture. Along with tufting, Chesterfields typically have arms and a back that are the same height as one another, and the more traditional versions of these sofas have rounded arms. Modern updates to the Chesterfield are found in vibrant colors and fabrics, and may have more squared and angular lines than their traditional counterparts.
Consider the Chesterfield has been around since the 1700s, I’d say you definitely don’t have to worry it’s a fleeting trend.

When you add a tufted leather sofa to an otherwise industrial-style room, it works to soften the look of the entire room.

Modernizing Tufting
If you’re worried tufted furniture will automatically make a space look too traditional for your tastes, modernize it through your choice of colors, materials and lines.
