In design, sunrooms can be one of those strange ambiguous spaces that don’t have a defined purpose for a lot of homeowners. They can go under-utilized or unused altogether, which is really a shame because a sunroom has the potentially to be a beautiful and functional space, but as with anything in your home, it’s all about how you design it.
Sunrooms can become a general living space, a place for entertaining or a refuge for relaxation within your own home.
The above picture isn’t a sunroom in the traditional sense, but that’s exactly what it becomes with some smart design. A bay window nook that would otherwise be wasted space has become the perfect seating space in a Beverly Hills home originally built in the 1920s.
The room above doesn’t feel like a sunroom—it feels like a plush, comfortable living area but you also get the advantage of the natural light that pours in from the windows. It’s a great representation of a room that makes the most of the architectural features of the home and the design style combines Provincial elegance with a casual California feel.
Even though the sunroom above is small this doesn’t limit the design or utilitarian features of the space. The furniture pieces look like they’re designed for both indoor and outdoor use and the divided seating areas create the feeling of a traditional living room, even though this is a classic sunroom.
Sometimes a sunroom may have a unique shape or size and something customized can work well in the space like this custom-built window seat that makes good use of the available square footage and the many windows.
The above is another good example of customizing a sunroom and in this room the built-in seating is pulling double-duty as storage as well.
Not only is the sunroom above completely functional as a second kitchen and dining space, but it’s also a unique take on sunroom design because of the combination of modern and rustic elements. A lot of times when we hear “sunroom” we think traditional space, but with the exposed wood and the metallic chairs and modern light fixtures, this room is anything but traditional.
