All good things come back around, right? That certainly holds true for wicker, bamboo and rattan furniture.
You may have thought the design world bid farewell to the trend in the 1970s, but it’s come full circle, and some of the world’s top designers are again welcoming furnishings, accessories and even lighting made from these materials.
I recently talked about how outdoor spaces are becoming more like their indoor counterparts, and this is a bit like the reverse of that trend. These are three materials often associated with outdoor usage, but the outdoors is coming inside.
If you’re incorporating wicker, bamboo or rattan in your home design, it’s versatile and you can make it work in a variety of ways, from modern, to vintage or traditional.
What’s important to remember with this trend is to make sure it looks like it was meant to be part of your design concept, rather than a random piece of outdoor furniture you’ve plunked in a room as a temporary fix.
Here are some ways to take advantage of the wicker, bamboo and rattan trend:
Start Small with Woven Lighting
If you love the natural, fresh appeal of woven materials, but you’re not sure about using them as furniture, start small with lighting.
Woven lighting made from wicker, bamboo and rattan is great as a focal point in a room.

Modernize it With Color
If you’re worried using a natural material like bamboo or rattan in your home will make it look too vintage, modernize it through the use of color.

Incorporating Texture
What’s great about any one of these materials is the way they instantly inject texture into a room. If you have a neutral color palette, and want to add depth and dimension, woven furniture is a good way to do it.
