The dining room is one of those areas that tends to face design issues.
The first problem I see in a lot of dining rooms is a lack of a cohesive design. It can be one of those rooms where all of the old, unwanted or hand-me-down furniture finds a home, and none of it goes together or contributes to any sort of overall look.
The other problem is dining rooms that are too stuffy, overly traditional or very formal. These rooms tend to not get used as much as they should, because they feel like one of those off-limits spaces.
The dining room can actually be a showpiece of a home, and can simultaneously be functional and inviting with the right design. If you love to entertain, revamp your dining room and you’ll have a space where everyone can gather and feel at home, while also admiring how chic and elegant the space is.
Here are some of my favorite ideas for creating a beautiful dining room:
As I mentioned, a lot of people tend to have a dining room that’s extremely traditional, but instead of picking one style, mix and match with the things you love. Pair modern and traditional items for a look that’s fresh and not so stuffy.
Don’t be afraid of unexpected colors in your dining room. You want your family and your guests to feel like the space is lively and fun to be in, and adding bright colors can really take your dining room from dull to daring.

Step Outside the Wood Box
So often dining rooms are just packed with wood—from the table, to the chairs and the surrounding furniture. Wood can feel heavy and really overwhelming if it’s the primary material throughout a dining room. Wood can be great, but so can other materials, as well as a combination of materials.
Light Fixtures That Wow
People automatically assume their dining table is going to become the focal point of the dining room, but light fixtures can make an amazing statement, and add drama to the room. They can also create a certain ambiance in the room, perfect for dinner parties and entertaining. When you’re choosing lighting for a dining room, you may want to consider dimmers, because you can adjust it according to the atmosphere you want to create.
